Well, it is about time but the European Space Agency (ESA) is in the conceptual phase of planning a mission to an asteroid to see if we (folks on Earth) can alter its course. There is no planned launch date so far and no NASA involvement so far. Good for the ESA! Memorial to Mars Rover, Spirit

For those of you who don't know, the Mars rover, Spirit, is officially off line. This little machine was only supposed to last three months and it made it six years. It was a part of daily life for a lot of folks at JPL. This is a link to the story, "GONE" by JPL's Stuart Atkinson. It is a brilliantly written memorial to the rover and well worth the time to read it. I love Atkinson's writing style and this story also took me back to a time in my childhood when space was the only thing that was important to me.

New Art Preview: Amistad Sunday

This banner resulted from a CD cover that I created for Jennifer Bynum, for her collection of Spirituals entitled, "Saw Mah Freedom Through Jesus." It was a great challenge to create an image that illustrated both slavery and then freedom through Jesus. I virtually visited a museum and saw many of the shackles used on slaves. I saw a neck ring with spikes, used so slaves could not sleep, sitting on its side and it immediately spun around in my head and I saw a cross. I created my own version of this torture device and oriented it as I had visualized it. For the freedom through Christ I've made a crown of thorns in the center thus being the focus and liberating element.

I am ever so thankful for such artistic freedom.

Without the text from the CD, as shown above, this makes a wonderful banner for Amistad Sunday, typically the second Sunday of March.

Background can be enlarged to add logos and/or words.

This banner can be printed at up to 32" wide. Length is 32" without additional words or logos. A variety of media is available.

It appears that there is quite a bit of controversy about this song. (Wow, just look at the comments on You Tube about it. People are passionate about their beliefs in all directions.)

The best comment for the few that I scrolled through was the following:
" thebear5454 wrote "A country devoted to FREEDOM". What a shame that politicians use God to divide us. Yes, our country is devoted to freedom of religion - that applies to EVERYONE's religion as well as their right from religion. Religious values begin in the home, and our church, synagogue, mosque, and mountain top of choice. It's not up to public schools, or our government to dictate any one religious belief. Let's not become jehadists."

This may stir up some controversy but I'm not sure I understand the continuing controversy because this country was founded for the purpose of religious freedom, to worship however you want. But there is the element of religion as our national heritage. Our president is sworn in usually on a bible (or even other sacred or important text), national cemeteries have crosses and stars of David and Islamic symbols (which are tributes to God), our money says it, out pledge says it, all branches of the military have chaplains, and the list goes on. So what is the problem? Seems pretty straight forward to me: worship how you like and no one should dictate how you worship--no state, no nation, no national body. You may be a naturist, a Druid, a Native, or a main line faith group--and that's OK. I worship God and my particular path happens to be through Christ. I will honor your path too. Religious heritage is part of our country.

Dr. Yusuke Murakami of the 50th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition, also viewed the exhibit. He spent 15 months in Antarctica as the wintering Team Geophysicist, Extreme Architecture Researcher. He had just flown in f rom Japan where has sat for 10 hours on the tarmac after the earthquake and tsunami struck. His plane finally lifted off and he was able to confirm that his family was safe.

Dr. Thomas Duxbury, Research Professor, Planetary Science at Deorge Mason University, admires Julie Jones's Accretion Disk 2. Dr. Duxbury was the first person to map a moon outside of our own moon. It was Phobos. He was one of the first people to see images of Phobos as Mariner 9 approached Mars. Julie ate lunch with Dr. Duxbury and heard wonderful stories of the early days of visualizing Phobos and Deimos.

An attendee to a NASA Ames class stopped by and suggested that more conferences should have the IAAA show its art. We agree!

The second day brought in a new group of people including NASA Ames staff and a group of archivists, who told us about the art in the NASA Ames collection. Perhaps next time we will collaborate. They have an original Chesley Bonestell from when he was commissioned to create early-on mission art by NASA Ames.

What a great beginning we had to the art show! There was a wonderfully large room with plenty of space between the art and room for people to slowly walk around. We had additional spot lighting too. NASA Ames already had the easels up so arranging them was simple. Bill Hartmann and Walt Myers, along with Kira Lorber, our student assistant, helped unpack and set up the show. Kira is the Logistics Manager at the Mars Institute and is currently a student at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France. Thanks Kira for your assistance.

Everyone who came by had positive comments:

The conference was introduced by Dr. Pacsal Lee, co-founder and chairman of The Mars Institute, who kindly acknowledged the IAAA and other participants. This was followed by remarks from Bill Hartmann, Walt Myers and Julie Jones who told the audience how we hope to inspire scientists and the public and what a great organization the IAAA is. Walt had been commissioned to make the conference poster--and what a beauty it is!

A buffet reception with wine followed. The Mars Institute welcomed the IAAA and the attendees in a GRAND style. Good job, everyone.

Tuesday and Wednesday the exhibition is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. It is open to the public and is at Building 3 (Conference Center) at the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA. Click here for directions. All are welcome to join us for this amazing art show.

Redesigned "Waves" Stole for a 70" Short Stole

Redesigning this for a short 70" stole ended up being SIGNIFICANTLY more difficult than I could have imagined. Working on side 2 now for a customer who wants a two sided short stole. The hardest part was adding the transitioning color for the seams and getting a decent looking neck. I think it came out pretty nice. More stoles are HERE. (Allow time for the artwork to load.)
