If you have to stand at the stove you might as well be looking off into space.

Let's get artsy in the kitchen!!! Several weeks ago our "over the stove" microwave oven died for the last time. We decided not to replace it and just had a ventilation hood installed. The only problem with that was that it left a gaping space in the wall above the stove with no tiles. What to do?! We both thought something artsy would be nice so I considered two pieces of my art to turn into tile. Here is what we considered:

Julie Rodriguez Jones' "Abraded Surface." The colors were right and the circular shape seemed to compliment kitchen elements such as plates, platters and pans.

Julie Rodriguez Jones' "Supernova Remnant"

Not knowing where to start, I took some photos of the kitchen area and posted some art to my Facebook page for comments. I changed the image immediately above to beiges and reddish browns to match the oak cabinets and the beige tiles. Folks commented and it was decided to do the following only I didn't quite know where to start concerning making tiles.

Facebook was a great place to start and my friend and art colleague Joy Day of Spherical Magic came to the rescue and said that she did glass tiles! (She does everything else so I don't know why I didn't think of this!) I called tiling installers to get bids and ideas and we are currently making the final decision. The tiles will be 8x8 and I will size the art to accommodate the needs of the 12 tiles which will make up the art. We will probably avoid as much grout as possible between the tiles to make the art look as seamless as possible. More to come when we choose a tile contractor.

New Thanksgiving and Fall Leaves Clergy Stole Preview

This is our newly redesigned Thanksgiving and fall leaves stole. These leaves go all the way around the stole. In this view you see the front of the stole and the back of the collar. The leaves were originally created in tempura. The art is now transposed into our fabric print for fall and Thanksgiving.

We create our own art and print our own fabric.

Stole details are at the bottom of any of the liturgical art pages in the right hand column.

This redesign was inspired by a trip to the Southern Highlands Craft Guild in North Carolina with our friends Chuck and Janet Johnson where beautiful colors blossomed everywhere.

Protecting Earth from Asteriods: The Don Quijote Mission

Well, it is about time but the European Space Agency (ESA) is in the conceptual phase of planning a mission to an asteroid to see if we (folks on Earth) can alter its course. There is no planned launch date so far and no NASA involvement so far. Good for the ESA! I'd love to see more cooperative space efforts though in these difficult financial times rather than "us or them." NASA is hurting for money. The complete article on Universe Today is HERE.
